Archaeological Recording through 3D Laser scan
A.P.A.C. Ltd provides 3D laser scanning for historic buildings, archaeological sites and other structures across Wales, the Welsh Borders and the West Midlands. Using our FARO scanners, we create detailed, measurable records to support archaeological recording, conservation, restoration and building projects.
Laser scanning captures the shape and features of a site in three dimensions. The resulting record can be examined in detail, used to take measurements and, where required, to produce drawings. This is particularly useful for complex buildings or sites where an accurate record is needed before work begins.

Why Use 3D Laser Scanning?
- Record a site before it changes: capture the existing condition of a building or archaeological site before restoration, alteration or groundworks.
- Measure complex features: Record features that are difficult to measure by hand, such as bowing or leaning walls in older buildings, and measure how far they bow or lean with millimetre-level precision.
- Support plans and drawings: use the scan data as a basis for measured drawings and other project records, depending on what is required.
- Revisit the record: return to the captured data to check details, which may reduce the need for further visits to the site.
- Share a clearer picture of the site: a three-dimensional record can help archaeologists, architects, conservation specialists and clients understand the building or site they are working with.
