Abergavenny Castle
In 2021, A.P.A.C. Ltd undertook an archaeological excavation at Abergavenny Castle, a Scheduled Monument situated on the southwestern edge of the town. The work was commissioned following the appearance and gradual enlargement of a hole within the base of the castle’s southwest Solar Tower, raising concerns about the cause of the collapse and the potential impact on the surviving historic structure.
A.P.A.C. Ltd had previously completed a detailed 3D laser scan of the castle in 2019, which provided valuable survey data showing that a depression was already forming within the tower at that time. Following Scheduled Monument Consent from Cadw, an archaeological excavation was carried out in June 2021 to investigate the collapse, establish its cause and record any archaeological remains exposed during the work.
