Costs & Timescales FAQs
How much does archaeological work cost?
The cost depends on several factors, including:
the type of archaeological work required;
the size and location of the site;
the duration of the groundworks;
the number of archaeologists required;
the amount of archaeological material encountered;
specialist analysis or finds processing required; and
reporting and archiving requirements.
If you send us your planning information and details of the proposed work, we can provide an estimate based on the requirements of your project.
How long does archaeological work take?
This varies considerably between projects.
A small watching brief may only require a short site visit, while an evaluation, excavation or larger building survey may take considerably longer.
Reporting and any specialist analysis also take place after the fieldwork has been completed.
Can you give me an estimate from my planning documents?
Yes.
It is helpful if you can provide:
the site address;
planning application reference;
archaeological planning condition;
proposed development drawings;
site or location plan; and
any correspondence or archaeological documents supplied by the council.
We can then assess what is required and prepare an appropriate estimation.
