Planning & Archaeology FAQs

Why have I been asked to have archaeological work carried out?

Archaeological work is sometimes required where a proposed development could affect known or potential archaeological remains.

The requirement will normally be recommended by the archaeological advisor to the Local Planning Authority and may form part of a planning condition.

The type of work required will depend on the site, the proposed development and the archaeological potential of the area.

Do I need an archaeologist before I can start building work?

If archaeology is included as a condition of your planning permission, you may need to have an archaeological contractor appointed and the necessary archaeological work agreed before development begins.

Starting work before the archaeological requirements have been dealt with could place you in breach of your planning conditions.

What should I do if archaeology is mentioned in my planning conditions?

Send us a copy of the relevant planning condition, planning application reference and any archaeological advice or correspondence you have received.

From this, we can usually determine what archaeological work is required and advise you on the next steps.

Can A.P.A.C. Ltd liaise with the council or archaeological advisor for me?

Yes. Where required, A.P.A.C. Ltd can communicate with the relevant archaeological advisor or Local Planning Authority regarding the archaeological requirements of a project.

We can also prepare the necessary archaeological documentation and submit reports for approval.
